Vintage Sweetness

Posted by Laura Johnson on April 14, 2011 at 12:00 AM Comments comments (2)

This last year I received several large boxes of fabric, patterns, and lace from an elderly lady in our church.  It was fun sifting through her collection, finding fabric or trims with receipts from 30 years ago or more.  She had very good taste and there were lots of treasures hidden in those boxes.  These lovely vintage laces and trims were some of them.  I don't know if you can see but there is a tiny row of cotton rick rack on the second tier of the skirt that is the tiniest rick rack I've ever seen.

So when I bought this gorgeous lawn from my friend, Laurie at Adorable Heirlooms, I saved it to make something special.  I was originally intending on a bishop, probably because this is the fabric Gail Doane uses for one of her cute jacket sets.   But, then I remembered that I've been wanting to make a Nanny Etticoat, which is my petticoat and slip pattern, into a sundress dripping with vintage charm.

I think Daisy approves.

I think Ellie wants to take Daisy home.

So, there's another way to use your Nanny Etticoat pattern.  I told you it is a pattern you will use over and over again! You can click on the link to download the pattern and receive it right away!  And then, go visit Laurie at Adorable Heirlooms for one of her beautiful lawns that are just perfect for this summer sundress!

The Beloved "Nanny Etticoat"

Posted by Laura Johnson on February 23, 2011 at 2:54 PM Comments comments (0)

A very popular pattern this month on my website and with some of my retailers is Nanny Etticoat.  Probably because it can take all those fancy Easter dresses from "ooh" to "oooh-la-lah!"  :)

Nanny Etticoat is a collection of four different slips.  I'm telling you what - this is one pattern that you will use over and over and over and over...

It can be a full petticoat (with or without a tulle underlining):

Or a simple a-line slip:

Or a half-slip:

Or a camisole (which I don't have any good pictures of yet).

One of my GENIUS testers thought outside the box and made it a twirly sundress.

When I get some time, I'm going to do that too because Ellie loves wearing that full petticoat.  This picture is when she was two in her Christmas petticoat.

If you haven't tried my Nanny Etticoat pattern, I think you will really like it and I KNOW it is one that you will wear out from using it so much!

Nanny Etticoat is Finished!

I will be adding Nanny Etticoat to the shop today!!

A collection of four easy pieces: petticoat, half-slip, aline slip and camisole.  This pattern is very easy for a beginner but FULL of optional heirloom techniques for you to learn.

Here are the rest of the tester pic's that I couldn't fit on the previous post:

Julie made her daughter the petticoat version out of quilting cotton for a beautiful fall dress.  It is just gorgeous on your little girl, Julie!

Cynthia made hers the same way I made mine as a petticoat with a floaty, full skirt with tulle underneath and added an elegant machine embroidery to the bodice in a powder blue.  It is no secret that I long for an embroidery machine and this makes me wish for one even more!  I LOVE this Cynthia!

And here is the camisole view with lace insertions and feather-stitching.  You certainly could be more elaborate with entredeaux, lace beading, and pintucks and I tell you how in the pattern but this is a simple, inexpensive way to dress up the camisole.

Check back later today for this pattern to be available for immediate download!

Making Ice Cream and Making Patterns

Posted by Laura Johnson on October 13, 2010 at 1:46 PM Comments comments (4)

With our fresh milk that we got from the Dairy, the kids and I made homemade ice cream last night.  Yum!!

I let the kids pick the kinds they wanted to make.  We made creamy vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate with chocolate chips.  It was fun, messy, and verrry delicious.

With some chocolate malted milk balls...and, oops, a little ice cream that dripped when I was dishing it up.  (In case you didn't know, the messiness when making the ice cream was NOT caused by the kids!  Ha!)

And...guess what?

Nanny Etticoat is off to the testers this morning........

AND

I

DECIDED

TO

OFFER

IT

IN

SIZES

Yep, I heard your requests and emails and while I was writing it last weekend, I kept going back and forth with what sizes to offer it in and finally decided to just offer it to all  the sizes!

"Nanny Etticoat is now going to be available in sizes 1-12!"

(Um, ok, I think I may have watched this movie a few too many times!)

Nanny Etticoat will be available for purchase next week!!

What I'm writing today...

Nanny Etticoat

Little Nanny Etticoat,

In a white petticoat,

And a red nose;

The longer she stands,

The shorter she grows.

A collection of three petticoats and slips:

  • Full, tiered petticoat with a tulle underlayer and a lining
  • Simple a-line slip
  • Half-slip petticoat and possibly a camisole (pictures coming later this week)

A great set of basics to keep in your pattern collection.  You will use this pattern over and over!

Coming soon!

(I will be offering the holly berry shadow work design as a free embroidery design closer to Christmas!)

Don't forget about my Giveaway!!!  It ends this week!!

This weekend has been a busy weekend as you can imagine with writing patterns and testing.  The countdown is on and I'm sending the third pattern on to the testers today!

I normally work on patterns after the kids are in bed but, because of my rush to get these completed before SAGA Convention, and also because we are staying a little longer for a fun vacation with the kids, I could justify working like a crazy woman this weekend.

The kids were so good yesterday and understanding.  I had three boys playing around my feet setting up roads and towns and whatever else.  They dumped out three toyboxes in order to have things perfect, but...whatever.  They were happy...Mama's happy.

And Elisabeth did my hair

AND my makeup.

While I typed.

I was going to show you pictures.

But I changed my mind!

Have a good weekend everyone!
